Jalen Ngonda’s uptempo soul single draws from 1960s and 1970s influences
SOUL artiste Jalen Ngonda has released his new single Hang It On The Shelf, the second offering from his upcoming album Doctrine of Love, due out on June 5.
The track continues to build on his growing reputation within contemporary soul, following the earlier release of the album’s title track.

Hang It On The Shelf draws from classic soul
Hang It On The Shelf leans into an uptempo groove shaped by influences from the 1960s and 1970s soul, blending those elements with modern pop and R&B.
The single reflects Ngonda’s approach to revisiting classic sounds while avoiding direct imitation, with his distinct vocal style carrying the track.
New album explores wider influences
The upcoming album Doctrine of Love expands on his established sound, incorporating elements of folk rock, doo wop and early rock and roll alongside soul.
Ngonda has described the project as drawing from different eras while maintaining a consistent artistic direction rooted in classic influences.
The album follows his debut Come Around and Love Me, which introduced his falsetto-driven sound to a wider audience.
Ngonda has continued to gain traction through streaming and live performances, with his single If You Don’t Want My Love surpassing 253 million streams.
