Shereen Samson Vallabuoy wins 400m gold while Umar Osman breaks national record and takes silver at the New Taipei City Open.
NATIONAL women’s runner Shereen Samson Vallabuoy won the gold in the women’s 400 metre (m) event at the New Taipei City Open today.
She recorded a time of 52.73 seconds (s) to beat Jithma Wijhetunga (53.16s) and Sophia Gregorevic (53.86s), while in the men’s 400 m, Umar Osman could only secure the silver medal with a time of 46.42 s, 0.2 s behind Australian Brenton Kerr.
Methawi Kanhaaudom of Thailand was third with a time of 46.43 s.
Umar also managed to smash his own national record in the 400 m during the heats, setting a new record of 45.73 s to erase the old record of 46.09 s set at the World University Games in Chengdu, China in 2023.
“I’ve waited for this national record of 45.73 s for three years. All the ups and downs, my sweat during training and the spirit to rise up finally has borne fruit,” he said in a video shared by Athletics Malaysia on Facebook today.
