SHAH ALAM: What began as a small environmental initiative inspired by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has evolved into a sustained movement for conservation, education and community engagement.

Established under CaSeH in 2017, CaSeH Environment is aimed at promoting environmental sustainability through hands-on conservation activities and environmental awareness programmes.

Since its launch, the initiative has engaged hundreds of students, staff and community members in projects that contribute to ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

2026 marks the 10th anniversary of CaSeH Environment, a flagship initiative under Management and Science University’s (MSU) Faculty of Health and Life Sciences (FHLS) dedicated to sustainability, nature conservation and community engagement for humanity.

The programme’s first project was launched at the Guthrie Corridor Expressway (GCE) in April 2017, where 100 Bucida buceras trees were planted to enhance environmental quality and public green spaces.

This marked the beginning of a long-term commitment to environmental stewardship, supported by MSU and industry partners.

Over the years, CaSeH Environment expanded its efforts beyond tree planting.

In 2019, the initiative participated in the rehabilitation of the Raja Musa Forest Reserve, one of Selangor’s most significant peat swamp forest ecosystems.

The project involved approximately 100 students and advisors working alongside the Selangor State Forestry Department and the Global Environment Centre to restore degraded forest areas and support biodiversity conservation.

A major milestone came through its strategic partnership with Free Tree Society Malaysia (FTS), established in conjunction with World Earth Day 2019.

The collaboration strengthened CaSeH Environment’s capacity to implement long-term environmental programmes focused on forest conservation, urban greening, ecological restoration and environmental education.

Among its flagship initiatives is the Forest Restoration and Conservation Project at Pulai Trail, Bukit Persekutuan, Kuala Lumpur. Since 2021, volunteers have actively participated in tree-tagging, forest maintenance, clean-up campaigns and biodiversity conservation efforts.

One notable achievement was the successful tagging of 819 mature trees, later enhanced with QR codes that transformed the trail into an interactive “smart forest” learning space for visitors and researchers.

The organisation also spearheads the Tree Restoration and Planting Project which supports urban greening through propagation, potting, and nurturing of native tree species at FTS nurseries in Bangsar and Taman Tugu.

Through regular volunteer activities, students gain practical environmental knowledge while contributing directly to communitybased sustainability efforts.

Another innovative initiative is the Aquatic Ecosystem Revitalisation Project, developed to enhance amphibian habitats within the Pulai Trail Urban Community Forest.

Through the construction of artificial wildlife ponds and habitat restoration activities, the project has already recorded positive ecological outcomes, including the return of frogs, dragonflies and other biodiversity indicators that signify improving ecosystem health.

Beyond conservation activities, CaSeH Environment places strong emphasis on experiential learning, student leadership and community participation.

The initiative regularly organises environmental awareness programmes, sustainability campaigns and educational projects that encourage responsible environmental practices among students and the wider community.

Aligned with SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land), CaSeH Environment continues to demonstrate how collaborative action between educational institutions, non-governmental organisations, and local communities can generate meaningful environmental impact.

As environmental challenges continue to intensify globally, CaSeH Environment serves as a model of how sustained grassroots action, youth engagement and strategic partnerships can contribute to protecting ecosystems, restoring biodiversity and building a more sustainable future for generations to come.
