With the school holidays just around the corner, many Malaysian families are swapping long-haul travel plans for destinations closer to home.

According to travel platform Agoda, Malaysians are increasingly looking to local destinations for their next family adventure, with accommodation searches revealing a mix of city breaks, heritage escapes, cool-weather retreats and seaside holidays.

Based on accommodation searches made between April 1 and April 29 for stays from May 15 to June 15, Kuala Lumpur emerged as the most searched domestic destination among Malaysian travellers with children. Penang, Cameron Highlands, Malacca and Port Dickson rounded out the top five.

The results highlight a growing appetite for convenient, family-friendly holidays that offer plenty to see, do and eat without the need to leave the country.

For many families, a holiday does not necessarily require a long journey.

Kuala Lumpur claimed the top spot on Agoda’s list, with accommodation searches increasing by 45% compared with the same period last year.

The capital continues to attract families thanks to its mix of shopping malls, attractions, restaurants, hotels and entertainment options all located within easy reach. Whether it is spending the day at an indoor theme park, exploring interactive museums or indulging in a food-hunting adventure, Kuala Lumpur offers something for every age group.

Its popularity suggests that convenience remains a major factor for parents planning school holiday breaks.

Coming in second place is Penang, which recorded a 41% increase in accommodation searches year-on-year.

Often regarded as Malaysia’s food capital, Penang offers families the perfect combination of culinary adventures, cultural discoveries and historical charm. Visitors can spend their days wandering through George Town’s colourful heritage streets, sampling local hawker favourites, visiting museums or enjoying family-friendly attractions scattered across the island.

Its enduring appeal proves good food and rich cultural experiences never go out of style.

Families looking to escape the tropical heat appear to have Cameron Highlands firmly on their radar.

The highland destination recorded a remarkable 96% increase in accommodation searches compared with the previous year, making it one of the fastest-growing destinations on the list. Known for its rolling tea plantations, strawberry farms, flower gardens and cool climate, Cameron Highlands provides a refreshing change of pace from city life.

For families seeking nature, fresh produce and a slower holiday rhythm, the highlands remain an attractive option during the school break.

The historic city has long been a go-to destination for weekend road trips, offering a blend of heritage architecture, museums, riverside attractions and beloved local dishes. Families can easily spend a few days exploring historical landmarks, browsing antique shops, cruising along the Malacca River or sampling the city’s famous Peranakan cuisine.

Its accessibility and abundance of activities make it an easy choice for families looking for a memorable short getaway.

From beachfront resorts and water sports to sunset strolls along the coast, the destination remains a popular choice for families seeking relaxation and quality time together.

Agoda country director for Malaysia and Brunei Fabian Teja noted school holidays continue to be an important travel period for families, with many exploring the variety of destinations available in Malaysia. He added that travellers are increasingly looking for holidays that offer convenience, flexibility and value, whether that means a city staycation, a food-focused escape, a highland retreat, a heritage adventure or a beach holiday.

As the school holiday season approaches, one thing is clear: Malaysian families do not have to travel far to find their next memorable getaway. From vibrant city attractions and culinary hotspots to cool mountain landscapes and coastal escapes, the country offers plenty of options for every travel style and budget.
