KUALA LUMPUR: SBM Offshore, a global leader in offshore energy solutions, is positioning itself for its next phase of growth in Malaysia by strengthening its core floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) business, expanding into new energy technologies and deepening its involvement in the energy transition and blue economy, while reaffirming the strategic importance of its Kuala Lumpur operations.

Managing director, global resources and services Stephane Lagrange said looking ahead, the global offshore energy solutions provider remains focused on scaling its capabilities in its core FPSO solutions business while exploring opportunities in emerging energy markets and technologies.

He said these efforts are expected to play a key role in supporting the company’s long-term growth ambitions as the energy sector continues to evolve.

“Central to these plans is the Kuala Lumpur Execution Centre, which will continue to serve as a critical pillar of SBM Offshore’s global operations.

“The Malaysian centre will further strengthen its position as a regional hub, supporting projects and delivering expertise that contribute to SBM Offshore’s worldwide business objectives,“ Lagrange said at the SBM Offshore KL 20th Anniversary event today.

He said as SBM Offshore broadens its footprint in energy transition initiatives and blue economy opportunities, the Kuala Lumpur centre is expected to play an increasingly important role in driving innovation, project execution and operational excellence across the region.

“SBM Offshore’s continued development of its Malaysian operations reflects its confidence in the local workforce and its commitment to leveraging the country’s engineering and technical capabilities to support its global growth strategy,“ Lagrange said.

Moving on, he said SBM Offshore’s global workforce remains one of the company’s key competitive strengths, underpinning decades of expertise in delivering complex offshore energy projects worldwide.

With more than 8,000 employees globally, the company supports nearly two million barrels of production capacity per day across its fleet. This is backed by an accumulated 385 years of operational experience, reflecting the depth of knowledge and expertise developed throughout its history.

Lagrange said Malaysia has become an integral part of the group’s global operating model.

“Malaysia plays a critical role within SBM Offshore’s global organisation. As one of our four core execution centres, the team here contributes across the full spectrum of project delivery, from engineering and technical expertise to supply chain, project management, construction management, safety, quality and operational excellence.”

Lagrange noted that the KLEC employs almost 500 people across 10 functions, supporting projects and operations worldwide. The centre serves as a multidisciplinary hub, providing expertise throughout the lifecycle of SBM Offshore’s projects.

He said the Malaysian operation exemplifies the company’s integrated approach to delivering large-scale offshore energy solutions.

“The strength of our Malaysia team lies in its diversity of expertise and its ability to collaborate across disciplines. The centre has evolved into a strategic hub that supports global projects while contributing significantly to SBM Offshore’s long-term growth ambitions.”

The Kuala Lumpur centre continues to strengthen its position within the group’s global network, leveraging local talent and technical capabilities to support increasingly complex projects and future opportunities in the energy sector, Lagrange said.

Among the projects supported by the Malaysian team are FPSO Kikeh, FPSO Aseng, FPSO Ngoma, FPSO Xikomba and FPSO Turritella, all of which have played important roles in SBM Offshore’s global portfolio.

More recently, the Kuala Lumpur centre contributed to the successful delivery of FPSO Sepetiba and FPSO Alexandre de Gusmao for Petrobras, one of the company’s longstanding clients and partners.

Lagrange highlighted the performance of FPSO Alexandre de Gusmao as a notable achievement, noting its rapid start-up following deployment. “The successful delivery of Alexandre de Gusmao reflects the dedication, expertise and collaboration of our teams. It is an achievement that demonstrates what can be accomplished when technical excellence and strong project execution come together.”

He added that the Kuala Lumpur team should take pride in its contribution to the project, which has been recognised as one of the fastest start-ups for its class of floating production systems.

Looking ahead, SBM Offshore Malaysia remains actively involved in the delivery of FPSO GranMorgu, being developed for TotalEnergies in partnership with Technip Energies. The project will be the first floating storage and offloading vessel deployed offshore Suriname and represents another milestone in the company’s growing portfolio of international energy projects.

“Projects such as GranMorgu demonstrate the confidence our clients place in SBM Offshore and the important role our Malaysia team continues to play in supporting projects that are shaping the future of offshore energy development,“ said Lagrange.
