A viral discussion questions whether Malaysia’s public library hours from 8am to 5pm truly serve students and workers.

A discussion on Malaysia’s public library operating hours has gone viral after a Threads user questioned whether current schedules truly serve the people they are meant for.

In the post, the user wrote: “Libraries in Malaysia are open from 8am to 5pm on weekdays. My question is: who actually gets to use them?

“Even students only finish school at around 2.30pm.

“Libraries should stay open after 5pm on working days, perhaps until 10pm or even midnight.

“On weekends, they can operate during the usual hours of 8am to 5pm.

“We keep talking about becoming a developed nation, but facilities like this don’t seem to support that goal,” the post read.

The post struck a chord online, with many users agreeing that current library hours make it difficult for both students and working adults to access reading spaces consistently.

Some netizens pointed out that students typically only reach home in the afternoon, while working adults are occupied until the evening—leaving a very narrow window for public library usage, if at all.

Others argued that if Malaysia is serious about cultivating a stronger reading culture, accessibility must go beyond infrastructure and include more practical operating hours.

A number of commenters suggested that libraries should extend their weekday hours into the night, especially in urban areas, to better support students, researchers and the working public. Some also proposed keeping weekends at standard hours while shifting weekdays to later closing times.

“It feels like even if we set up a volunteer system to help run libraries, there would probably be people interested. In the UK, the volunteering system is quite good—many people join.

“When I was in the UK, I used to volunteer at a student support service counter at the university. There was no pay at all, and it was only about 2–3 hours a week, but it was genuinely enjoyable work,” one user called msibkbbz suggested.

“Exactly. For workers, they can just hire part-timers. Why make it an issue? It’s just a waste if you upgrade facilities but not many people actually come. So who is the target group really meant to be?” shin.iskandar asked.

“As a mother with young children, I also feel that libraries should stay open until night. In the morning, we’re busy with this and that, and only manage to go out in the afternoon. If libraries were open until around 10pm, at least we could spend time there from afternoon into the night,” zulaihaburhan opined.
