Khairul Aming defends his restaurant’s SOP counting babies as one pax, citing safety and comfort for all diners

INFLUENCER-turned-entrepreneur Khairul Aming has defended a new standard operating procedure (SOP) at his restaurant Rembahyung that counts babies and toddlers as one person per table, saying the measure is aimed at protecting children and ensuring the comfort of all diners.

Khairul addressed the issue in a video after questions surfaced on social media over why infants and young children are considered “one pax” despite not consuming meals like adults.

He explained that several incidents had occurred since the restaurant opened six months ago, prompting management to introduce the policy.

According to the new SOP, strollers and baby chairs must be placed at the table itself rather than along walkways used by waiters carrying hot food and drinks.

“I do not make any profit from this SOP. In fact, it is a loss because babies do not eat rice. But I am doing this to protect the safety of babies. When there are a thousand visitors a day, anything can happen,” he wrote on his Threads account.

In the video, Khairul said parents often place strollers along pathways beside tables, creating potential hazards for staff carrying piping hot dishes and drinks, including hot water in glass cups.

“If four parents (two couples) bring two babies in two strollers and place them in the middle of the path, and imagine if hot dishes or hot water accidentally spill onto the baby in the stroller, it would become a safety issue. This is why I want to consider them as a pax.

“This way, we can take them out of the path and place the stroller at the table, so they can eat peacefully,” he said.

Khairul also pointed out that some parents carry young children in their arms, which increases the risk of accidentally knocking over plates or cups containing hot drinks.

He added that placing baby chairs at the side of tables could also affect neighbouring diners.

“Children do not eat like adults; they eat messily and that is normal for children. The problem is I also have to consider the comfort of neighbouring tables.

“Some people come to celebrate anniversaries, birthdays, or just hang out with friends. I cannot assume all customers will be comfortable,” he said.

Many netizens supported the move, with some praising Khairul for prioritising safety over profits.

One user, who identified himself as a father, said the policy struck a balance between seating arrangements, convenience and comfort for everyone.

“Honestly, I think it is the best way to balance seating capacity, convenience and comfort for everyone.

“It helps families with babies while also being fair to other guests who are trying to enjoy their meals. A simple rule, but one that benefits everyone,” the user wrote.

Another user commended Khairul for looking beyond business considerations.

“His level of thoughtfulness and responsibility is commendable. He is looking beyond profit and considering the comfort and safety of his customers, and this effort should be recognised,” the user commented.

Others praised Khairul for taking the time to explain the rationale behind the SOP.

“It is amazing how Khairul Aming has the patience to explain his SOPs when other businesses do not bother to explain theirs but because he is a public figure, people feel entitled to question him. This response is also a smart move,” one user wrote.

Another netizen said that consideration should be mutual.

“Being a parent does not mean the world revolves around you. If you expect others to be considerate of your needs, you should also be considerate of others. Do better,” the user said.
