SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said grassroots branches across the state should be ready to mobilise for campaigning.

KUCHING: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) has instructed its election machinery to be fully prepared for a state election that could be called within the next 100 days.

Speaking at the party’s 67th anniversary celebration in Kuching on Wednesday night, SUPP president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said grassroots branches across the state should be ready to mobilise for campaigning.

“Spread the message to all our grassroots teams.

“The state election will be held within the next 100 days from now.

“We in SUPP are going into election battle and cannot afford to be complacent,” he said.

Dr Sim, who is also Sarawak Deputy Premier, said the party has already identified its candidates and is ready for the coming contest.

He reiterated that SUPP would continue championing the slogan “Sarawak is for Sarawakians” as a central theme of its campaign.

“We maintain our stand that Sarawak is for Sarawakians.

“We will continue to fight for this through the party and in the state election.

“Our political struggle is based on this principle, including our position on the Malaysia Agreement,” he said.

Dr Sim also expressed confidence in the ruling coalition’s prospects, pointing to earlier remarks he made at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak convention on April 19, where he predicted the opposition could be left without representation after the next election.

At the time, he said the coalition was aiming for complete dominance in the state assembly and suggested that opposition parties, including DAP in Sarawak, could face the same fate as their counterparts in Sabah.

The Sarawak Legislative Assembly currently comprises 82 seats. GPS controls 79 seats, while an independent assemblyman holds one seat and the DAP holds two seats — Pending and Padungan.

The current term of the state assembly is scheduled to expire on Dec 18, although it may be dissolved earlier to facilitate a state election.
