SINGAPORE Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has revealed he is a lifelong Tottenham Hotspur fan after a chance encounter with a fellow supporter at a coffee shop, in a clip that has since gone viral on Instagram.
The Instagram video begins with Wong casually chatting with a football fan at a local coffeeshop about the ongoing World Cup, before the conversation turns to club allegiances.
The man sitting beside him then asks the Prime Minister which football club he supports.
“The team I support from very young — Tottenham Hotspur,” Wong replied, prompting an excited reaction from the fan: “Same ah sir!”
Wong then reflected on some of Tottenham’s iconic players from the 1980s.
“In the old days, it was Glenn Hoddle, Ossie Ardiles, Garth Crooks,” he said.
He went on to acknowledge the emotional rollercoaster of supporting Spurs, adding that “They try, try, try, but very little success.”
The fan remained upbeat about the club’s prospects, confidently predicting a strong showing in the 2026/27 season, to which PM Wong responded: “Wah! You’re very optimistic.”
The exchange quickly struck a chord with football fans online, with many Spurs supporters flooding the comments section to share their enthusiasm.
The Singapore Spurs Supporters’ Club said they had “always knew” PM Wong had “good taste”, while many netizens echoed the club’s famous chant: “Come on you Spurs!” (COYS).
